Wax melts vs candles: which suits you?
Share
We pour both, in the same coconut wax with the same fragrances, so we have no side to take. Melts and candles do the same job by different means, and each is better at certain things. Here is the fair comparison.
How they differ
A candle is self-contained: wax, wick, flame, vessel. You light it and the flame does the work.
A wax melt has no wick. You sit it in the dish of a wax burner, warmed by a tealight or an electric bulb, and the wax melts and releases scent without ever burning away. The fragrance eventually fades, the wax remains, and you swap it for a fresh melt.
Where melts win
Scent control. Take the melt out, the scent stops. Put half a melt in, the scent softens. Melts let you dose a room in a way a candle cannot.
Cost per scented hour. Melts are the economical way to run fragrance. A £4 box of three snap bars (37.5g) gives around 30 hours of scent, which works out at pennies per hour.
Swapping scents. Changing a melt takes seconds, so one burner can be coastal in the morning and woody by evening.
Flame-free option. With an electric burner there is no flame at all, which suits busy households and forgetful evenings. (With a tealight burner, normal candle safety still applies.)
Where candles win
The ritual. Striking a match, first flicker, the slow build of scent: a candle is an event in a way a burner is not. If the point is to mark the evening starting, the candle marks it.
Light. A melt gives you scent. A candle gives you scent and that low, moving light no bulb quite imitates.
The object. A melt is wax; a candle can be a thing worth keeping. Ours are poured into cast-stone vessels made from scratch, designed to be cleaned out and reused when the wax is done. Nothing about a melt survives it.
Presence as a gift. A boxed candle reads as a gift. A box of melts reads as a top-up.
If you prefer a woody scent, our Smoke & Suede cedarwood candle is the one to start with.
The honest answer
Most people who love home fragrance end up with both: candles for evenings and rooms where the object matters, melts for kitchens, hallways, daytime and scent-swapping. Melts are also the cheapest way to audition a fragrance before committing to the candle version.
Trying Limewick either way
Our five scents are the same in both formats. Online, the simplest starting point is our wax melt boxes: £4 each, or any three for £10, so you can find your scent before choosing a candle. They come along to our Birmingham markets too, where you can smell everything first anyway.
If you already know your scent family, the Scent Guide maps all five to rooms and moods, and the candles themselves are here.
Quick answers
Do wax melts last longer than candles? Per gram, yes. Around 30 hours of scent from a 37.5g box of melts versus approximately 25 hours from a 155g candle. The candle spends its wax on flame and light; the melt only ever makes scent.
Are wax melts safer than candles? With an electric burner, there is no flame, so there is less to supervise. With a tealight burner, treat it exactly like a candle: stable surface, away from draughts and curious pets, never unattended.
Can I reuse wax after the scent fades? The wax has done its job once the fragrance is gone; lift it out and start fresh. It is spent, not dangerous.
